People We Love: Esperanza Spalding

25-year-old American jazz phenom Esperanza Spalding and her towering upright bass are touring Europe right now and causing a sensation! Not only are the music critics amazed by the sheer talent, but all abuzz about what to expect next from such a young artist! You can catch her in Paris, November 8, 2010 at the Théâtre de l’Atelier.

Esperanza began playing violin at age 5, but soon followed with oboe, clarinet, piano, guitar and bass, all the while playing classical music by ear and composing! At 15 she had her first gig as a conductor. Enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at age 16, she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau and Pat Metheny and at 20 became the youngest teacher there in the history of the school.

Her first album, “Junjo”, came out in 2005, and was well received in the US; but in 2008, Esperanza began making a name for herself in Europe with her CD “Esperanza”, clearly defining her jazz aesthetic and featuring songs in both English and Spanish.

Her latest CD, “Chamber Music Society” is a MUST, where she truly becomes one with her instrument and pushes the limits with an incredible duet with one of her own idols, Brazilian guitarist, Milton Nascimento.

Austin Film Festival 2010

What perfect weather for another festival right? Austin couldn’t be more desirable right now as the venue for the 17th Annual Film Festival and Conference which opens today. 

The Film Festival runs Oct. 21st – 28th, while the Conference runs Oct. 21st – 24th.

The first festival of its kind, the Austin Film Festival gathers industry professionals, aspiring filmmakers, screenwriters and film lovers for a week of interactive conference panels, film screenings, parties and networking creating an intimate and casual setting for attendees and panelists to discuss their craft.
An outstanding program of narrative, animation and documentary features and shorts, including premieres, advanced screenings, and independent films awaits the more than 25,000 movie-goers that will attend the screenings at this event. Film screenings are complemented by lively and informative Q&A sessions with cast members and filmmakers.

The Palais Lascaris

Testimony to Genovese baroque architecture, the aristocratic Palais Lascaris in Nice, France was built in the mid-17th century for the Counts Lascaris-Vintimille, under whose tutelage it belonged until 1802.  The City of Nice purchased it in 1942 in very poor condition and in 1946 designated the building an Historical Monument. It has since been transformed into a museum well worth visiting should you find yourself on the French Riviera.

Nestled in the heart of Nice’s Old Town on Rue Droite, the Palais Lascaris is home to the municipal museum of “popular art and traditions”. Although its architects are unknown, its style is Genovese baroque. Major renovations did not begin until 1963 but were completed in 1970 when it was officially opened to the public.

Its opulent façade, large windows and balconies with marble balusters draw you into a foyer where a monumental staircase winds upward, surrounded by frescoes and luxuriously decorated salons on each floor. Flemish tapestries, statues, furniture dating from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as faiences from the same era embellish the residence. The third, “noble” floor, so-called due to the apartments situated there, boasts its original ceiling frescoes dating from the 17th century. The statues and the rococo décor of the salons were added in the 18th century.

The Palais is also home to a beautiful collection of antique musical instruments, some of which are on permanent display.  In 2009, the Groupe Axa presented the Palais Lascaris with an exceptional gift – the Gaveau-Erard-Pleyel foundation. The elements of this foundation, put together by three of the biggest names in European musical instrument manufacturing, consist of instruments, books, letters, engravings, tools, illustration, photos and more, all of which tell an elaborate story of the history of the piano and the harp from the 18th century until the mid 20th century in France and all of Europe.

The exhibit will be on display in the Palais Lascaris from October 20, 2010 to April 2011.

Austin City Limits Music Festival - October 8-10, 2010

This weekend Austin plays host to more than 75,000 fans (per day!), 130 bands on 8 stages featuring artists of all music genres for the annual ACL Music Festival in Zilker Park.

This sold out event, named after the legendary PBS concert series, boasts another incredible line-up this year with the Eages, MIA, Phish, Muse, The Strokes and The Flaming Lips headlining.

We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather this year - forecast is sunny and cool  (low 80’s!) – especially after last year’s downpour and resulting mud fest… eeeoouw!!

Tickets are sold out but you might be able to score some on Ebay, Craigs List or, if you’re lucky, through local radio give-aways. In any case, bring your hats, your shades and your smile, it’s going to be a beautiful weekend in downtown Austin!
