Kuta is a town in southern Bali, Indonesia. A former fishing village, it was one of the first towns on Bali to see substantial touristdevelopment, and as a beach resort remains one of Indonesia's major tourist destinations. It is known internationally for its long sandy beach, varied accommodation, many restaurants and bars, and substantial Australian population. It is located near Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport.
Kuta was the site of the October 12, 2002 Bali bombing (202 killed) and the October 1, 2005 Bali bombing (26 killed).
Kuta is now the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area that merges into the neighboring towns. Legian, to the north, is the commercial hub of Kuta and the site of many restaurants and entertainment spots. Most of the area's big beachfront hotels are in the southern section of Tuban.
Legian and Seminyak are northern extensions of Kuta along Jl. Legian and Jl. Basangkasa. They are somewhat quieter suburbs with cottage-style accommodations, where many of the expat crowd live. Also to the north are Petitenget, Berawa, Canggu, and Seseh - new and quieter continuations of Kuta's beach. They are easy to reach through Abian Timbul or Denpasar and Kerobokan. Several large hotels are located in this area: the Oberoi Bali, Hard Rock Hotel Bali, the Intan Bali Village, the Legian in Petitenget, the Dewata Beach and the Bali Sani Suites in Berawa.
To the south, Kuta Beach extends beyond the airport into Jimbaran. Other nearby towns and villages include Seseh (6.4 nm), Denpasar (4.5 nm), Ujung (1.8 nm), Pesanggaran (2.0 nm), Kedunganan (2.9 nm) and Tuban (1.0 nm).
The Balinese Provincial Government have taken the view that the preservation of the Balinese culture, natural resources and wildlife are of primary importance in the development of the island. To this end they have limited tourist development to the peninsula on the extreme southern aspect of the island; Kuta beach is on the western side of this peninsula and Sanur is on the east. To the north of the peninsula no new tourist development is supposedly permitted.

Kuta is a former fishing village, it was one of the first towns on Bali to see substantial tourist development, and as a beach resort remains one of Indonesia’s major tourist destinations. It is known internationally for its long sandy beach, varied accommodation, many restaurants and bars, and convenience to Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport.

In the early ’70’s surfers, hippies and adventurous travelers made it to Kuta Beach, with its perfect coastline, simple guest houses and bamboo warungs. In the early days there were few creature comforts for visitors, with rice, fish and fruit making up a large part of the diet. Cooking oil was also a luxury, so coconut oil was used, giving the food a less than delicate flavour. Pork fat could be substituted, although not entirely the healthy was to go.
In the early days of Kuta tourism a few enterprising people set up warungs to serve the growing tourist market. Among the most successful were Made’s Warung (Jl. Pantai Kuta) and Poppies Restaurant (off of Poppies I), both still in business. Another long time favourite is TJ’s (Poppies I), owner Jean starting out with a vegetarian restaurant and moving to Mexican food in 1984.
Kuta is now the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area that merges into the neighboring towns. Legian, to the north, is the commercial hub of Kuta and the site of many restaurants and entertainment spots. Most of the area’s big beach-front hotels are in the southern section of Tuban.
Legian and Seminyak are northern extensions of Kuta along Jl. Legian and Jl. Seminyak. They are somewhat quieter suburbs with cottage-style accommodations, where many of the expat crowd live. Also to the north are Petitenget, Berawa, Canggu, and Seseh - new and quieter continuations of Kuta’s beach. They are easy to reach through Abian Timbul or Denpasar and Kerobokan. Several large hotels are located in this area: the Oberoi BaliHard Rock Hotel Bali, the Intan Bali Villagethe Legian in Petitenget, the Dewata Beach and the Bali Sani Suites in Berawa. To the south, Kuta Beach extends beyond the airport into Jimbaran.
Kuta is just 2 miles from Ngurah Rai airport in Tuban, making it an ideal first night for many visitors. An airport taxi might cost around 25,000rp, dropping you in the Poppies Lane / Benesari area, with a choice of budget / mid-range accommodation.
After the 2002 Sari Club / Paddy’s Bar bombing, Kuta’s nightlife hit the skids. Seminyak seemed to be charging ahead with new bars opening, some of which were conspicuously open at the front, allowing easy escape should there be another bombing. Kuta’s location however meant that was due for a rebound, so with MBarGo, Hook, The Wave, the new Paddy’s, Sky Lounge and other venues, Kuta is a strong contender for nightlife action.
One of the fun ways to check out the neighborhoods in Bali, including Kuta is by using Google Maps. This site allows you to zoom in and out and check out the area. You might spot a few places you’ve been before. Kuta may not look like the French Riviera, but real estate is worth top dollar. In fact most landowners in Kuta will not sell, realizing that times may change, but the location will always mean business. Some long term expats still live in the Tuban, Kuta, Legian area, feeling at home with neighborhood and comfortable living close to the friends they have developed over the years.
Kuta may not be paradise, but it is not the hell hole some travellers make it out to be.
• Kuta Banking hours:
Banking hours in Bali
Banking hours in Bali are Mon-Fri 8am-4/5pm. Some may open Sat 8am - 11am, but this depends on the bank and is not the rule.

The busiest times are Mondays, particularly, and anytime between 9am and 3pm. You will line up for a long time if you have a local account. Getting a local account is easy and the most popular banks are BCA, BII, BNI. Many expats get a safety deposit box in a bank. These are secure and cost 380,000rp per year.
If you are wondering which bank is the best for opening an account at, BCA gives the most interest, but has the most bank charges. BII has the least charges, but gives the least interest. If you have an Indonesian bank account and need to deposit of withdraw over $1,000, you should do that before 2pm, otherwise the staff may not want to help you.
Changing money in a bank is possible, even if you don’t have an account. You sit at the desk, rather than lining up and a staff member will serve you. The good thing about changing money at a bank is there is way less chance of deception. Banks will also cash travelers checks, although these are used way less than 10 years ago, due to ATM machines.

Bank Mandiri
has a pretty nifty website with a lot of online services.BCA is a very popular bank with many ATM’s. If you are looking for a BCA branch ask for ‘Beh Che Ah’ , that’s how its pronounced. BNI is another popular local bank. The Yellow Pages here in Bali has a complete listing of all the banks and branches.
• Kuta Shopping:

Shopping hours in Bali
Bali is a tourist destination, so the business hours are skewed as a result of the need to cater to tourists. Banks are open from 8am / 9am to 2pm /3.30pm, depending on the bank, closed Saturdaygenerally. Restaurants are often open from 10am-11pm or later, with some opening at 7.30 am for breakfast and staying open till late. The fusion of restaurants and lounge bars blurs the line when places close. Bali has a selection of 24 hour businesses which include:

Air Conditioning, Cafes, Clinics, Drug Stores, Florists, Internet Services, Mini Markets, Money
Changers, Car Rental, Petrol Stations, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Wartels, Passenger Transport and Travel Agencies.
Matahari Department Store in Kuta Square is open daily from 9am-11pmBintang supermarket in Seminyak is open from 9am-10pmdaily. Discovery Shopping Mall in Tuban is open from 9am to 11pm. In areas such as Kuta and Sanur, clothing and jewelry shops open between 9am-10am and close around 9pm-10pm, depending on the shop.
Handicraft shops tend to open when the tourists wake up, which in Kuta, can be late. They stay open till maybe 10pm. It is handy to note a few places that are 24 hours, just in case you need a late night service.Restaurants in the Kuta area that stay open 24 hours includeDouble D on Jl. Legian, next to Star Surf and ESC, on Jl. Legian across from Poppies II.
Kuta Galeria Bali
Kuta Galeria is the fancy project located at the bottom of the Sunset Rd in Kuta. It offers an American style, open-air mall, with creatively designed shops. Not strictly on the tourist trail, Kuta Galeria doesn’t attract the number of people, its designers probably hoped for. Still, there are some good businesses operating there and with plenty of space yet to be filled, we can enjoy watching Kuta Galeria grow. Among the cool ‘extras’ is a climbing wall, located outside X-treme Store. Anyone can have a go, don’t worry about there being no ropes, just don’t look down. Among the businesses I have used in the Galeria, are Ace Hardware and Blueline ISP. Among the newcomers to Kuta Galeria is Warung Batavia. This popular Seminyak warung, served authentic Javanese style food. I love the fish soup with tangy vegetables.

warung bataviaThe staff today told me Warung Batavia Kuta Galeria has the exact same menu as its sister outfit. You will find tofu, tempe, an array of vegetable dishes, chicken, fish and beef. The food is generally not pedas (spicy hot) and has some interesting sauces. If you are getting some supplies at ACE, stop over and get some delicious food.
The large wooden warung style tables outside are great for relaxing, and enjoying the shade. The warung is open daily from 9am-6pm.

Nasi Padang: A good cheap alternative in Bali
Nasi padang is a version of Indonesian fodo that originates in Sumatra. All over the Kuta/ Legian / Seminyak area are padang places, selling a version of the same thing. Basically you get a plate of nasi putih(steamed, white rice) and select from plates of food in the window. A curtain protects the food from flies, and locals have learned, that burning a candle helps to keep them away.
Items include grilled chicken, tuna, pototo cakes, fried tempe, beef, and random animal parts. Today I stopped into Pondok Duo, on upper Jl. Seminyak. The people operating this place were Muslim as are all padang places. A visual clue will be the black and gold Arabic writing from the Koran on the wall.

Warung Nikmat: Kuta Bali

nikmatIndonesian cooking and methodology combine, in a popular local warung in Kuta. Warung Nikmat serves Javanese style food, which includes beef rendang, in thick brown coconut sauce, light curry sauces and plates of vegetables, meats and types of fish. Warung Nikmat is located close to Hotel Bakung Sari (along Jl. Bakung Sari, which leads to Kuta Square / Jl. Kartika Plaza). The way things work is you line up / form a mob, around the horseshoe-shaped seving area. There are so many bodies inside that area pointing and serving, the only way to see what food you want, is to push in further. Pure madness, but why change if it works for you?

The Wave - Jl. Pantai Kuta. Great location on the beach, with deck, restaurant and band.
Zappaz - Jl. Oberoi, Seminyak. Close to KuDeTa / Rumours. Bar / restaurant that has rock bands. This place might not look like a music venue, but I’ve seen some very good musicians here.
Bali Nightlife scene in Seminyak / Kuta
Jl. Dhyana Pura used to be more of a draw for nightlife, but 2 of the most popular places closed, Spy Bar and Liquid. Now there is a line of gay bars (Kwin, Q Bar, Kudos, and others). For gay travelers you’ll find an accepting scene in Seminyak.

Kuta accommodation:

The village of Kuta has changed dramatically since the first modern age travelers drifted in in the early 1970’s. Back then the small lanes running between the main street and the beach were just sandy tracks, complete with palm trees, cattle and crater-sized potholes.
Getting to Legian meant going to a completely different village. Nowadays the Kuta-Legian-Seminyak strip is one contiguous sprawl. The actual village of Kuta (now a very rich village) is bordered by Jl. Bakung Sari at the southern end, Jl. Melasti at the northern end, Jl. Pantai Kuta to the west and Jl. Tanjung Mekar to the east. Given that rents are highest for beachfront hotels and hotels located on major streets, the cheapest accommodation can be found along the narrow lanes that connect the main business street and the beach.
The cheapest beds in Kuta
Bottom end prices for Bali guesthouses on Poppies Lane I, Poppies Lane II, and Jl. Benesari are around 40,000 rupiah (around US$4). Gang Ronta (lanes in Bali are called gangs), the narrow gang that connects Poppies I & II has a selection of budget places, most of which are clean, simple with fan and coldwater shower, and are perfectly okay for most of the year.
Booking a cheap place in Kuta
Staying in budget accommodation along one of the small gangs means you do not have to worry about pre-booking. Simply take an airport taxi to Poppies Lane (price around 30,000rp) and check out a few places. Christmas and New Years are busy so start looking as early as possible during the time, but ordinarily you’ll find somewhere.
Advantages to staying in this area
Staying between the main street and the beach has its advantages. Restaurants, bars, shops are all within easy reach, as is the Perama bus office located on the bottom section of Jl. Legian, which is the major business street that runs parallel with the beach.
Many guesthouses and hotels will try to sell you day tours and motorbike rentals. The area around Poppies II & Jl. Benesari are the staging areas for surfaris to other parts of the island and Indonesia, with plenty of businesses offering packages.

Popular guesthouses in Kuta

Below are some popular and notable places in Kuta. More information in much greater detail can be found on the Accommodation on Poppies II Lane page.
Kedin’s II (0361-763554) located on Gang Sorga, another small gang joining Poppies I & II (via Gang Ronta & the beach end of Poppies I).
Ayu Beach Inn (0361-752091), located close to Gang Sorga On Poppies Lane I, down a long driveway.
Suji Bungalows (0361-765804) and Hotel Sorga (0361-751897), are on Gang Sorga and both are decent places offering a choice of fan or AC rooms with hot water.
Un’s Hotel (0361-757409) on Jl. Benesari, which is accessed by following Jl. Pantai Kuta up one more block from Poppies II. This good value place offers large well-furnished rooms, swimming pool, lush gardens. Un’s also has a decent restaurant (The Balcony) attached, which is popular with families and surfers (photo of Kelly Slater eating at Un’s on the wall).
Poppies Cottages (0361-751059) is one of the ‘old school’ places to stay in Kuta that has endured due to its good reputation and great location. Poppies has very nice cottages set in lush, well kept gardens. There is a small swimming pool, internet access and library. Located on Poppies I close to Poppies Restaurant and TJ’s Mexican. Poppies Restaurant isn’t a budget place but does great food, including the best mie goreng in Bali!
Walking around Kuta you will discover many more value for money places to stay, some which renovate and change hands, creating a dynamic and interesting set of options.
• Places of interest:
Mads Lange’s Tomb: Kuta Bali

mads lange tombOne of the smaller places of interest in Bali is the tomb of Danish trader Mads Lange. For people not familiar with the Kuta / Tuban area, this monument takes a bit of finding. This afternoon I typed the co ordinates from my map book into the GPS and ended up atSupernova supermarket. Frustrated with the result, I asked a local who directed my in Bahasa Indonesia, south down Jl. Blambangan, hanging a left at Jl. Tuanlangga. Just around the corner was Mads Lange’s tomb. The reason my GPS was off was the symbol for the tomb was miss-located in the map book. It actually lies next to the river.

The shady cemetery is all home to a dozen or so other graves, most with Chinese names. The tomb of Mads Lange looks like some kind of Javanese dessert, a black and white stone pyramid, dominating the area.
mads lange tombEntry to the tomb is via a side gate, there isno admission feeno guide or other information. It takes only 10 minutes to check the place out, and was cool for me as Mads Lange was one of the very first westerners to live in Bali and one who had a huge impact. To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth which will beSeptember 18th 2007, an organizing committee has been arranged consisting of representatives from Malaysia, Singapore, Brasil and Denmark. There will no doubt be a special ceremony at the site on this date. If you want to visit Mads Lange’s tomb and really can’t find it, here’s an easy way. Driving north on the Bypass from Nusa Dua to Kuta, about 1.5km north of the airport on the left side you’ll see a huge red and yellow sign saying SURF FACTORY OUTLET. If you pull in there and park, the tomb is a 200 meter walk from there, heading back 100 metersand going into the small lane 100 meters.

Bali Bombing Monument: Kuta

bali bombing monumentSince I moved to Bali in 2003, the Kuta area has been on a redevelopment drive. We have the Wave, MBarGo, Hook, Viper, Sky Lounge, new shops and restaurants. In the epicenter of the bombing zone, known as ‘ground zero’, places like Macaroni and Pub Bagus are back in business. The bombing memorial itself looks quite spiff, with potted plants, a marble wall with the names of the victims, tiled road and circle where the actual bomb was. Today tourists drifted past, some stopping to read the names and takes photos.

Plans are afoot to develop the Sari Club site, but as yet its still an empty plot covered in weeds. If you are visiting Bali, feel free to stop by the Bali Bombing memorial. It does not cost anything and is open 24 hours a day. The annual ceremony takes place here on October 12th.
Pasar Seni Kuta

pasar seni kuta baliPasar Seni Kuta (Kuta Art Market) is located between Kuta Square / Jl.Kartika Plaza and the beach. Its quite a large area and has rows of stalls, selling the same stuff you’ll find all over Kuta. The idea ‘if it works for your neighbor, copy it’, has been fully blown out in this neighborhood and most people are twiddling their thumbs, due to the downturn in tourism. Wandering the art market today I did see some wooden clocks, that were in the shape of a giant wrist watch, quite clever. There were hanging Jesus’s, picture carvings with elephants, 4ft long carved lizards painted in Aboriginal motifs, Hawaiian shirts, baseball hats, surf shorts, Bintang t-shirts and mess-topped bamboo food dishes.

It costs nothing to browse a pasar seni, and if you don’t want to but just say, “Saya lihat-lahat saja.” (I’m only looking).
Pasar seni is open from 9-10am and closes at 7pm-8pm.
